Ren Riley

As a restorer of antique textiles I have had my hands on thousands of quilts and textile art of all kinds. I have been particularly interested in African American Quilts. The African American quilts always appeared very painterly to me. With their unexpected choice of patterns and colors. I have been inspired to take vintage fabrics that were discarded and repurpose them into my own renditions. I try and use the fabrics like I was painting with them so no traditional way of piecing these was used.I will usually get inspired by shapes or color combinations and then start bouncing them off each other until something make sense. Sometimes a conversation will start happening within the piece I'm working on and other times I'm just responding to what's starting to evolve. When I feel like it's a statement,I back them and bind them by hand.
